What is Procrastination?
The act of postponing work is known as Procrastination. ”I’ll do it later” is the thought which comes up in our mind when we have something important to do. Though it becomes important before the deadline. Procrastinating makes us avoid even the salient tasks such as a meeting, gathering, and reunions.
Procrastinating ends up making one lazy and dull, so, Scroll down to read the Causes of Procrastination.
Causes of Procrastination
So the picture above might give you a few of the causes for procrastinating. Well, there are more than a thousand reasons for avoiding work. A person who has no mood of doing something can give you another thousand reasons for not doing his/her work. So let us discuss the main causes first.
1. Fear of Failure
Back in school days there used to be several competitions held which were related to giving a speech, reciting a poem and some other cultural stuff. Most of us avoided these competitions because either we were shy enough to face the judges and the audience or maybe we never wanted to lose so we kept avoiding the competitions seeing the list of participants who were better than us.
Few tips to overcome the fear of failure include
- Reframing your goals – by this, we mean that setting a goal which you’re capable to achieve. Setting up a very big goal which is very difficult to achieve at the moment can make you nervous and may result in failure.
- Visualize obstacles – This step is a bit difficult but very important. We all know what stops us from achieving our goals but still, we fail to visualize the obstacles in front of us. For example, you want to study for the exam the next day but you’re checking your Facebook newsfeed for a new meme after 5 minutes, in this case, the obstacle is your phone.
- Look into your fear of failure more deeply – If you don’t know the exact reason for your failure, then no one can help you to overcome it. Try to find out the things which are preventing you from succeeding.
- Stay Positive – This one is very crucial. If you have negativity in your mind and you keep thinking about the bad aspects of every task you are doing then you will surely fail. No one would like to socialize with you, everyone dislikes negative people. So be positive even if your blood group is A positive ( Poor joke I know right, sorry :p).
2. Excessive perfectionism
In simple words, excessive perfectionism is being obsessed with unattainable goals. Pressuring oneself to accomplish something which is out of their league.
Perfectionist tends to demotivate themselves by setting high standard goals and then they criticize themselves for their own deeds.
3. Low energy levels
If you keep sitting in front of the television or scrolling the news feed, listening to music or maybe Netflix and chill then you will probably feel lazy and hate getting out of your bed even for peeing! Low energy levels are an early sign of laziness and procrastination. If you feel lazy while working you can
- make yourself a mug of coffee
- put everything aside for 10 mins and Do Running-on-spot
- walk in park
4. Lack of focus
While doing your assignment which has to be submitted by tomorrow, but inside your mind, you are thinking about whether your friend tagged you in a meme or not? Maybe a new movie? Or a new Netflix series.
There’s no solution for distractions until and unless you train yourself to stop thinking them.
You can increase your level of concentration if you meditate for at least 10 minutes a day when you wake up.
Effects Of Procrastination
Procrastination can destroy your life, dreams, health, and relationships.
Let me tell you some common effects of procrastination;
1. Oh no! I should have done that before.
The very first effect is not completing anything on time. No matter how much time you get to complete a task, if you are a procrastinator, you will do it 1 night before the day of submission.
2. Time and tide wait for none!
Procrastinators lose very precious time of their which they could have used for many different activities.
3. Bad reputation
Okay, so you don’t want to be embarrassed in front of your classmates and especially when your crush is also in the same class because this will affect your reputation. So what can you do about this? Submit your assignments on time, being regular and stop procrastinating. No girl would date someone who procrastinates.
4. Health risks
This one is probably ignored while discussing the effects of procrastination.
You procrastinate because you are lazy, and you are lazy because you procrastinate. Laziness and procrastination are interrelated to each other.
Sitting on the couch with snacks in one hand a cold drink in the other and watching your favorite web series. Well, this seems so relaxing but it is actually destroying your health. Eating junk food and not doing anything and sitting like a panda all day will make your tummy grow and you will feel less energized. You can also be a victim of diseases like a heart attack!
So we have discussed the causes of procrastination and the effects of procrastination. Now let us focus on the main reason, the reason which landed you on this page.
